The Food Pyramid

The Food Pyramid is an easy-to-understand guide to making healthful food choices based on U.S.D.A. Dietary Guidelines. The Pyramid recommends eating a variety of foods to get the nutrients you need, while eating the correct amount of calories to maintain a healthy weight.

Each of the food groups shown in the Pyramid provides some, but not all, of the necessary daily nutrients. No food is "good" or "bad;" any food can fit into a healthy diet if used in moderation.

Variety is also important, and not only because it adds interest to meals. With a varied diet, you get essential nutrients for health and energy -- and, if you're a youngster, for growth.
