The Food Pyramid
The Food Pyramid is an easy-to-understand guide to making healthful
food choices based on U.S.D.A. Dietary Guidelines. The Pyramid recommends
eating a variety of foods to get the nutrients you need, while eating
the correct amount of calories to maintain a healthy weight.
Each of the food groups shown in the Pyramid provides some, but
not all, of the necessary daily nutrients. No food is "good"
or "bad;" any food can fit into a healthy diet if used
in moderation.
Variety is also important, and not only because it adds interest
to meals. With a varied diet, you get essential nutrients for health
and energy -- and, if you're a youngster, for growth.
The Food Pyramid also recommends a balanced diet, which means enough
servings from all five food groups to meet your nutrient and calorie
requirements. Keep in mind that food choices are balanced over several
days, not merely one meal or snack.
